So much lust for the Folio Society edition of His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman. Illustrated by Peter Bailey
books everybody should read → his dark materials by philip pullman
what it’s about: the trilogy is the coming of age story of lyra belacqua and will parry; who wander through a multiverse of parallel universes
why you should read it: it’s a fantastic combination of magic, science and theology; it features a number of fantasy elements such as witches and (my personal favourite) armoured polar bears; encompasses a broad range of ideas from physics, philosophy, and theology; and is essentially a study of humanity. the world building is so incredibly, incredibly detailed and so easy to imagine, it truly feels as if you are part of the story.as for what it’s against - the story is against those who pervert and misuse religion, or any other kind of doctrine with a holy book and a priesthood and an apparatus of power that wields unchallengeable authority, in order to dominate and suppress human freedoms.
